Corpus of Finds (Melodious Singing)

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Corpus of Finds references Andy Warhols “Blow Job” (1964) depicting only the

facial expressions of a man receiving fellatio. ‘Corpus of Finds’ shows the heads

of two men and a woman, each engaged in a sexual act.

Through careful layering and colourediting, the work becomes a moving painting,

with the feel of religious vision and ecstasy as well as existentialism.

Protogenoi

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

'Protogenoi' is a shortmovie, recorded in an old chapel in Antwerp that was

used as a storage place. The story is a free interpretation of the theater monologue

'Happy Birthday' by Johan Dehandschutter, who acts in the movie.

It is the visual exploration of a particular state of mind. It presents basic psychological

metaphors, for example a house as symbol for the characters psyche. The house itself

is not a real-built domicile but a clearly constructed fake decorum.

It is violated and intruded, even more so as the character tries to isolate himself.

Ultimately the house is the second player in the movie, it becomes the antagonist

to the man and casts him out instead of offering shelter. The surrealistic plot and

sexual refenrences might have certain common ground with psychological interpretations

of 'Alice in Wonderland' by Lewis Caroll.

Furthermore it experiments with a combination of performance, sculpture and moving

image.

Negeraufstand ist in Kuba (Negro Riot in Cuba)

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

'Negro Riot in Cuba' is a critical music video of a racist German childrens’ song

with the same name (published 1953 in the German songbook “Mundorgel”).

In the song (which is heard in this video) the verses describe in a scoffing way

the horrifying cruelty with which white people are slaughtered in a riot on Cuba.

Deduced from the language the style of the music video is set in the twenties,

although it probably originates in the 19th century.

The black and white images as well as the cartoon animations represent the

simplified and one-sided point of view of the song.

White

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The installation was made for an exhibtion where each artist was given an old caravan

to work with.

The interior was altered in a way that only three of the original cupboards were left.

The floor was lined with white vinyl, giving it a sterile and alienating look.

Each cupboard was given a singing voice. They each sang their name (‘mom’, ‘dad’,

‘me’) in a repetitive choir that swells up and ebbs away from low and silent to loud and

high.

The effect is disharmonial, sometimes reaching a strange harmony, sometimes unbearable

in the loud an high registers. This emphasizes the smallness of the space.

Ornithology / visual concept and set design

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Ornithology is a short movie by S. Vanderjeught. The story revolves around a young

man that is obsessed with birds, in a world where birds are forbidden.

As it is unclear if this world is real or imagined, my visual concept as art director

suggested the protagonist in some sort of institution, staging his surroundings and

the outside world inside.

The movie was shot on two floors of an old school building in Antwerp. All outside

‘locations’, some of the interiors as well as furniture were executed to my designs.
